Holiday Punch with White Guava

Ever heard of Ponche Navideño? It’s a Mexican drink enjoyed around the holidays. Traditionally, it’s made with native tropical fruit, spices, sugar and dried fruit. What’s not to love about that? Plus, it includes white guavas! Say, what!

We can get on board with a fruity drink like that, so you’ll be sure to find a pot of this warm cheer on our stoves this holiday season!

Not only can you enjoy the punch as a drink, but it also serves as a wonderful diffuser. Your house will smell like the holidays with all the aromas of cinnamon sticks and whole cloves.

Enjoy this pot of hearty, holiday flavor by itself or serve it alongside your holiday spread of food - cheers!

Enjoy this sweet, spicy and fruity holiday punch with white guava and spices of cinnamon and cloves. Add alcohol if wanted or leave the recipe as is for a holiday punch all can enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 quarts water
  • ⅓ cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ lb white guava (2-3 guavas)
  • 1 apple
  • 1 navel oranges
  • 1 Asian pear
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Equipment:

  • Stove
  • Pot
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Slotted spoon or colander
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Pitcher

Recipe Steps:

Infuse the hibiscus:

  1. In a large pot, bring the water and hibiscus flowers to a boil. Take the pot off the heat and let it sit for 15 minutes to allow the hibiscus to infuse.

Add the spices and fruit:

  1. Remove the flowers with a slotted spoon or colander and add the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce the heat to a simmer.
  3. Simmer for an hour or until the fruit takes on the color of the punch.
  4. Serve warm with a straw and spoon to eat the fruit.

Serving Suggestions:

You can leave the fruit, cinnamon sticks and cloves in the punch after simmering, but if you prefer the flavor not becoming too strong, strain out the fruit and spices.

Serve with a cinnamon stick and whipped cream for more of a dessert drink or just a spoon to scoop out and enjoy all the spiced fruits.

Make a pot of this punch and leave it on the stove, ready for any takers! Friends and family will be wondering what you have cooking up that smells like heaven.
