About The Harvest

It’s finally here...the “Chocolate Pudding Fruit!!!” For the culinary explorer, the Black Sapote is a trip for the bucket list! Native to Mexico and the Caribbean, it is extremely hard to find in the USA. Thanks to Wimal, and the Serendib family farm in Redland, Florida, we are excited to share FruitStand’s rarest harvest yet.

The black sapote is nature’s guiltless pleasure. Its rich, dark brown custardy filling is just like taking a bite of molten pudding. While not actually chocolate pudding (of course!) the fruit’s subtle sweetness is reminiscent of a creamy fall squash or pumpkin, though some do say they can taste a hint of chocolate.

Experience it for yourself... one bite is sure to be a foodie experience for the books!

Frequently Asked Questions

When your fruit arrives, they will be shiny, green and lightweight. As their color deepens and their skin becomes even more tender, they are ripening. Once the fruit is soft and slightly wrinkly, maybe even looking a little overripe, that’s when you want to dig in! Cut it in half, all the way around, likely hitting a few seeds nestled on the inside. Pull your halves apart and the large seeds will remain embedded in one half. Scoop a rich and delicious spoonful right out of the fruit’s skin, to enjoy its pudding-like custard. Enjoy as is or bake into breads, mousse or any other treat calling for subtle sweetness.

Serendib Farms is a small, 10-acre farm located in Redlands, Florida run by husband and wife team, Wimal & Elita Suaris. From Sri Lanka and the Philippines, the Suaris' have a passion for tropical living and cultivating the most unique and out-of-this-world produce. They've spent the last 30 years in southern Florida focused on growing the rarest varieties of Avocados, Longan, Passion Fruit and many more crops, embracing their short, limited-run harvest windows. They are committed to sustainable farming practices and serving up healthy and delicious produce to their community.

A fruit that looks like pudding and tastes like dessert? That’s black sapote fruit! Black sapote fruits are a delicacy everyone should experience. When ripe, this special fruit’s flesh turns a rich, chocolate brown color and becomes scoopably delicious. It’s a must-try!

Unique, something you might love!

I had never had black sapote before but was not disappointed. Your eyes will indeed deceive your tongue into thinking you are eating chocolate pudding. The texture is starchy, like a rich, soft banana, and can be used similar ways. It is a bit sticky & messy but also quite filling. My favorite was to eat it fresh topped with nuts, granola, honey, etc. We also baked it into brownies, which masked the delicate flavor, but still came out great. I wish I could grow this in my garden and will definitely be ordering them again.

Amazing!

I received my order just before Christmas and I’m still so amazed and overwhelmed at the quality of the fruit. I received such a lovely selection of fruit including a very generous sized black sapote in one of my boxes. When I saw it, I almost cried. Sapotes are my favorite and they couldn’t have picked a more grateful person so send that large one to. Thank you!

Subtle at first, builds after eating

Wasn't sure what to expect with this item but enjoyed it more and more after each bite. More subtle than what I expected, but really liked the texture and mouthfeel. Would order again. Shipped timely, received in good shape, very pleased with purchase.

Incredible!

So yes, I work at FruitStand, but I have never had Black Sapote. I had no clue what to expect. It arrived not yet fully ripe, which is great, because I wasn’t ready to eat them. They sat on the counter for a couple days, and slowly, they ripened up one by one. I cut into one fruit, took out the seeds and took a bite of the brown fruit. It tastes like a mild, sweet squash but the texture is like that of a rich mousse! I then scooped out all the flesh and mixed it with a little maple syrup and cacao powder. IT TASTES LIKE THE BEST CHOCOLATE PUDDING EVER! I was floored! I’m now obsessed and can’t live without them. I saved the seeds in hopes to grow a tree!
