Serendib Farms is a small, 10-acre farm located in Redlands, Florida run by husband and wife team, Wimal & Elita Suaris. From Sri Lanka and the Philippines, the Suaris' have a passion for tropical living and cultivating the most unique and out-of-this-world produce. They've spent the last 30 years in southern Florida focused on growing the rarest varieties of Avocados, Longan, Passion Fruit and many more crops, embracing their short, limited-run harvest windows. They are committed to sustainable farming practices and serving up healthy and delicious produce to their community.

Speckled Passion Fruit are the result of a naturally occurring cross-pollination between Purple and Yellow Passion Fruit. The ones grown by Serendib Farms are oblong, approximately 3 inches in diameter and are a fun speckled yellow and red hue. The jelly-like pulp with numerous seeds has a tangy flavor and can be eaten directly or juiced. Passion fruit juice can be added to other tropical fruit juices to enhance their flavor and aroma.

The first time you see passion fruit you may ask yourself, how the heck do I slice this beautiful thing? Never fear. The peel is easy to slice with a sharp knife, and separating the pulpy seeds and membrane is a breeze. This makes passion fruit perfect to use in countless recipes like smoothies, desserts, pastries, and marinades, or as a snack itself.

Here are some of the easiest, most common ways of how to slice a passion fruit:

  • Slice in half longways or from the middle. Then, scoop the pulp out of the rind using a spoon. Pretty easy, huh?
  • Using your thumbs, apply gentle pressure until the peel cracks open. Then pull the two halves apart to reveal the juicy seeds inside.
