The sweet and lightly tart balance of Mauritius Lychee is often flavor profiled as a hybrid of grape, citrus, strawberry and watermelon, with a hint of rose water.

About The Harvest

For twelve years, Wimal and Elita Suaris’ ten-acre farm in Redlands, Florida has been an oasis of the rarest varieties of avocados, longans, passion fruit and many more tropical crops. The husband and wife team embraces the intricacies of producing harder-to-grow and harder-to-find fruits. They are excited to share a seasonal delicacy, Mauritius Lychee, with the FruitStand community.

Mauritius Lychee, also known as Litchi or Alligator Strawberry, is a fruit native to China. It is an easy to peel variety with a good pit to flesh ratio. Known for its sweet, aromatic flavor and lush scent, lychee has the texture of a delicate-fleshed grape. The fruit is often flavor profiled as a hybrid of grape, citrus, strawberry and watermelon, with a hint of rose water.

Lychee is a refreshing snack on its own, but can also be pitted and added to fruit salads, sauces, desserts and beverages. The fruit’s almost inexplicable flavor profile boasts the perfect balance of sweet and tart, making it pair well with other tropical fruits.

WARNING: THERE IS A PIT INSIDE EACH PIECE. Be sure to remove the pit before sharing with small children, as the pit is a choking hazard. DO NOT CONSUME the hard, internal seed/pit or the outer skin as it can make you sick. Consume only the white flesh of the fruit.

Your Mauritius Lychees will arrive ripe and ready to consume. They are best eaten fresh. The lush, aromatic scent of the lychee and red color should indicate they are ready to eat. For optimal quality, store in the refrigerator for no more than three days. When ready to enjoy, gently press on the skin with your thumb to determine ripeness. The skin will give a little, but if it’s too soft it may have become overripe.

There is no need to wash lychee. Gently peel the skin with your fingers—it should come off easily when the fruit is ripe. Simply bite into the delicious, white, somewhat translucent flesh around the seed. If there are any browning or spotty patches, cut or eat around them. Some slight browning or spotting is normal and this later-stage ripeness indicator can occur in transit. You can also score the flesh along one side to reveal the seed, use your finger and thumb to pinch slightly and dig under the stone to remove it. Don’t mind the slightly brown membrane that occasionally remains on the flesh from the pit, it is edible and the fruit is too delicate to remove this layer. Lychee is a refreshing snack on its own, but can also be pitted and added to fruit salads, sauces, desserts and beverages.
