Important Information About

Organic Passion Fruit & Citrus

Your organic citrus will arrive ripe and ready to eat! You can tell your citrus is ripe usually by its fragrance and warmer (yellow or orange) hue. Their skin will be taut and the fruit will feel slightly heavier in your hand than in an unripe state.

Your Passion Fruit should be ripe upon arrival, but there might be some variation fruit to fruit. You’ll know they’re ripe when the skin begins to get slightly wrinkled or dimpled. Eat the wrinkly ones first (wrinkles usually mean the fruit is sweeter). Many people enjoy it before it reaches its wrinkly state (although it may be more sour), so feel free to experiment and taste! Passion Fruit should ripen in 1-2 days.

Valencia Oranges, Navel Oranges and Cara Cara Oranges make a delicious, sweet snack. We recommend enjoying these citrus as is, simply cut into wedges or peel to consume. Eureka Lemons are slightly more acidic than typical lemon varieties, but can be substituted for any of their common uses.

Passion Fruit can be eaten by slicing the rind in half with a knife and scooping out the seedy pulp with a spoon. We also recommend enjoying Passion Fruit as is, by the spoonful, straight from the rind. Passion Fruit is also delicious on yogurt or you can strain the pulp through a sieve to separate the juice from the seeds, although they are edible and provide a much-beloved crunch.

For recipes including your Organic Passion Fruit, Citrus Medley and Passion Fruit Shrub see below.

Your citrus can be stored on the counter at room temperature for usually a few days, however this method speeds up the ripening. With citrus this special, we recommend storing them loose in the refrigerator crisper drawer away from apples to keep them fresher, for longer.

It is not recommended to freeze whole citrus fruits. However you can freeze sections or slices on a baking sheet and then store in a resealable bag.

Store any un-wrinkled Passion Fruit on your countertop for 1-2 days to ripen. Once ripened, refrigerate Passion Fruit to keep them fresh for up additional 3-5 days.

Freezing Passion Fruit is a great option if you want to keep these tropical fruits fresher, longer. It’s best to freeze passion fruit pulp, not the whole fruit. To freeze, first, scoop the passion fruit pulp from its peel and place it into a freezer-safe container.

Any unused Passion Fruit Shrub should be stored out of direct sunlight in a dark cabinet or pantry.

About The Harvest

Jay Ruskey and his family grow some of the rarest fruits that can be found in California. They started their journey in 1992 and became a certified-organic farm in 2009. This beautiful agricultural area is known as “The Good Land” for its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate.

Each Good Land Organics experience will include Organic Passion Fruit and a selection of 2-3 of the following citrus: Valencia Oranges, Cara Cara Oranges, Navel Oranges and Eureka Lemons. They are also offering a box that includes a bottle of Sideyard Shrubs’ Passion Fruit Shrub—a fermented fruit vinegar for salad dressings, marinades, cocktails and the popular shrub soda.

Sideyard Shrubs is right down the road from Good Land Organics, and the two businesses share many of the same values, especially a commitment to food and agricultural practices that care for the earth and reduce food waste. Sarah, the owner of Sideyard Shrubs sources seasonal, imperfect fruits from neighboring farms and combines them with hand-harvested tropical fruits from her friends’ and family’s yards.

This experience will be shipped directly from Good Land Organics using FedEx two-day shipping to guarantee freshness. Information on how to use, store and recipe ideas can be found by clicking here.

Good Land Organics is a family-operated farm located in Goleta, California and nestled between the Santa Ynez mountains  and the Pacific Coast. This beautiful agricultural area is known as “The Good Land” for its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate. The team at Good Land Organics grows tropical, certified organic fruit and coffee using innovative agricultural practices. With a passion for organic agriculture, this family intends to preserve the ‘Good Land,’ for generations to come.

At Sideyard Shrubs, they make fruit vinegars from scratch in Santa Barbara, California. Sarah, the owner of Sideyard, is in business to make better, botanically-inspired beverages—beverages that celebrate the bounty, abundance and flavors of every season in Southern California. She is proud to primarily partner with local, certified-organic, non-profit farms to source seasonal produce for her Shrubs, paying particular attention to finding use for the imperfect, bruised and “ugly” fruit that is often otherwise unsellable and goes to waste. What she doesn’t source from these farm partners she hand-harvests herself from the “sideyard” gardens of friends and family.

Shrubs, also known as fruit vinegars, are delicious, good for you and great tasting. Shrubs are pure, fragrant, full of flavor and versatile - they're also packed with good-for-your-gut probiotics. With just the right tang, our fruit vinegars are the perfect addition to salad dressings, marinades, cocktails, and the popular shrub soda. Made with only organic ingredients, our Shrubs are unfiltered, naturally fermented in small batches -- one gallon at a time -- and bottled by hand. We are proud to source seasonal fruit from farmers that we know as friends, and feel like family.

Good- just a bit confusing

By the time I rec'd order, I couldn't remember what variety of fruits would be included and couldn't find that info online either (maybe no longer available?). The info included in box didn't include a description either. All but one of passionfruits were quite wrinkly but that didn't seem to make a difference in taste. They were delicious as were oranges and lemons. The shrub was tasty but if I followed the amount you might normally add to a cocktail it would have been waaaay too vinegar-y. Literally a tablespoon is all I could add without it becoming undrinkable. All in all rather expensive when you add shipping but a nice treat.

Incredibly fresh!

I loved the passion fruit + citrus box. I had never had fresh passion fruit, only cooked in desserts. This was very fun and exciting, and the quality was so fresh. I will absolutely order this again if there is another round of this experience.

Mixed bag

Would prefer a chance to get all passion fruit and not the citrus. (Though lemons and oranges were great). A couple of the passions were hollow, otherwise nicely ripe. Fairly pricey for what we got, but again, I would pay top dollar for all passion fruit. The shrub I can live without.
