Mud Creek is a sixty-five acre, certified-organic, family-owned farm located in Santa Paula, California. Best known for a deep commitment to biodiversity, Mud Creek is home to over 470 varieties of citrus trees amongst many other fruiting crops. The orchard team at Mud Creek specializes in experimenting with, and cultivating, citrus varieties from all over the world.
Raised in and around agriculture, Steve and Robin Smith of Mud Creek come from farming families that can be traced back several generations. In 1985, The Smith Family went out on their own and bought land suitable for a future farm property. Steve and Robin have been growing food and raising kids in Santa Paula ever since! Thirty-six years later, The Smiths have raised children who share their same passion for growing food organically, cultivating fruit trees, and promoting crop diversity in Southern California. Steve and Robin’s daughter, Marguerita Smith, along with her two siblings, is starting to take over the family farm from her parents. She brings with her an ardent passion for food and farming.
Marguerita says this harvest of Star Ruby Grapefruit is exceptionally delicious due to the latest wave of weather patterns, climate conditions, and how cold it has been this winter and spring in Santa Paula. Marguerita shared with the FruitStand team that “every 7-10 years or so the perfect climate yields a great crop.” The Star Ruby Grapefruits from Mud Creek have a uniquely vibrant tart-tanginess with just enough sweetness. Star Rubies are often eaten for breakfast. In addition, these grapefruits are great atop salads, in dessert and mixed into drinks (from mocktails to cocktails)!
