Mud Creek Ranch
Mud Creek is a multi-generational, certified-organic citrus farm best known for uncommon varieties of perennial fruit trees and crop diversity, growing up to 470 different types of fruit.
Mud Creek is a sixty-five acre, certified-organic, family-owned farm located in Santa Paula, California. Best known for a deep commitment to biodiversity, Mud Creek is home to over 470 varieties of citrus trees amongst many other fruiting crops. The orchard team at Mud Creek specializes in experimenting with, and cultivating, citrus varieties from all over the world.
Raised in and around agriculture, Steve and Robin Smith of Mud Creek come from farming families that can be traced back several generations. In 1985, The Smith Family went out on their own and bought land suitable for a future farm property. Steve and Robin have been growing food and raising kids in Santa Paula ever since! Thirty-six years later, The Smiths have raised children who share their same passion for growing food organically, cultivating fruit trees, and promoting crop diversity in Southern California. Steve and Robin’s daughter, Marguerita Smith, along with her two siblings, is starting to take over the family farm from her parents. She brings with her an ardent passion for food and farming.
Marguerita says this harvest of Star Ruby Grapefruit is exceptionally delicious due to the latest wave of weather patterns, climate conditions, and how cold it has been this winter and spring in Santa Paula. Marguerita shared with the FruitStand team that “every 7-10 years or so the perfect climate yields a great crop.” The Star Ruby Grapefruits from Mud Creek have a uniquely vibrant tart-tanginess with just enough sweetness. Their dark pink pulp is juicy, tender and contains few, if any seeds.
All produce is shipped direct from Mud Creek Ranch using FedEx two-day shipping to guarantee freshness. Information on how to use, store and recipe ideas can be found by clicking here.
The Star Ruby Grapefruit are grown and shipped directly from Santa Paula, California
Star Ruby Grapefruits from Mud Creek make for a delightfully refreshing snack. We recommend always rinsing your fruit. Peel or slice in half for a quick way to enjoy. Star Rubies are often eaten for breakfast. In addition, these grapefruits are great atop salads, in dessert and mixed into drinks (from mocktails to cocktails)! Pair them with avocados, tropical fruit, yogurt and greens.
Your grapefruit will keep at room temperature for 3-5 days, however this method speeds up the ripening. With citrus this special we recommend storing in your refrigerator crisper drawer for up to two weeks.
Steve and Robin Smith are the growers responsible for the good work being done at Mud Creek Ranch, a sixty-five acre, certified-organic, ecological food oasis and climatological sweet spot in Santa Paula, CA. Mud Creek is home to over 470 varieties of citrus trees amongst many other fruiting crops.
Steve and Robin were raised on respective family farms, and grew up in and around agriculture. In 1985, The Smith’s bought their own land, under the premise they were signing up for a “fixer-upper.” Over the years, Steve and Robin have come to learn what they truly signed up for: a lifelong commitment to biodiversity, organic agriculture, perennial orchard management, and so much more at Mud Creek Ranch.
With three young children at home in the early days, Steve and Robin wanted to grow the healthiest food to feed their family. Together, the Smiths built on their respective family’s traditional farm legacies, and made the official shift from conventional to organic farming practices in the 1990s. Thirty-six years later, you’ll find the entire family (parents and kids) selling Mud Creek Ranch produce together as a team at the farmer’s markets in Southern California.
